Notes

  1. Some charities allow you to reduce a portion of your donations from your income taxes. The figures in yellow correspond to the case where you use the tax reduction. The figures in blue do not account for this advantage. These figures are estimates. Learn more about tax reductions.
  2. According to an estimate by GiveWell (2022), distributing a mosquito net against malaria costs $5 (as a precaution, we have used a 1:1 conversion rate between dollars and euros).
  3. According to the cost-effectiveness analysis calculations for animal protection organizations (FarmKind, consulted on 11/07/2024), each euro donated could help 5.3 animals. Please note that this figure is very uncertain, and significant variation is possible. The details of the assumptions and calculations are available in their spreadsheet. (As a precaution, we have used a 1:1 conversion rate between dollars and euros).
  4. A report on the Clean Air Task Force (Founders Pledge, consulted on 11/07/2024) provides a conservative and realistic analysis of the expected impact of future projects within their Climate Change Cause Area Report. This report is an example of impact analysis for innovations in neglected technologies.

Methodology

The data on global income distribution comes from Our World In Data. The methodology used accounts for the standard of living in each country and inflation.

Two versions of the income calculator were developed. The first is based on data from the World Inequality Database, and the second on data from Our World In Data. Using these two different databases results in notable differences in the calculator’s outcomes. These differences are detailed here.

In a household with multiple members, certain expenses are shared. To account for these economies of scale, household income is divided by slightly less than the number of people in the household. For example, in a household of 3 people over 14 years old, the total income is divided by 2, not by 3. The number of consumption units in the household is calculated according to the OECD equivalence scale.
